Making Something Positive out of Social Distancing

On a personal level, we can look at social distancing as a way to improve our lifestyle in ways that will continue to serve us after the crisis is over. Use this list as a resource for ways to help optimize your lifestyle to make the most of these unfortunate circumstances.

  • Establish a regular sleep schedule - go to bed at roughly the same time, and wake up naturally if possible. This is important for overall health.

  • Learn what things make you happy alone - learning to be alone without being lonely is a skill that does not always come naturally, but which could be a great take-away to carry forwards into other aspects of life. Figure out what makes you tick, as we have fewer distractions now.

  • Develop gratitude - keeping a gratitude journal can make people happier and more positive overall. If you have time on your hands, and/or are feeling pessimistic, now may be a good time to start.

  • Meditate - apps like Headspace and 10%Happier our great resources to learn. Doing it regularly for ten minutes a day can make a big difference.

  • Learn a new topic - if you have extra time on your hands, taking a class through Coursera can teach you a huge amount and enrich you intellectually. Engaging yourself intellectually will keep your mind fit, which is healthy to do for our entire lives.

  • Start a consistent work-out routine - obviously only within the parameters of social distancing and lockdowns, but find ways to stay active around your house. Do it regularly.

  • Evaluate your priorities - figure out what is most important to you, whether you are doing it, and make a plan to start (now, or once it’s safe again).
